Constant evolution. Those two words best sum up Kamini’s approach to her twelve years of belly dance. She began dancing as an American Tribal Style student in 2002. As she developed as a dancer, so did her desire to incorporate a greater variety of music and movement forms into her dancing. In 2005 she co-founded a Tribal Fusion duet called the Bijou Project which provided many years of creative satisfaction and joy. But the winds of change blew in and three years ago she decided to challenge herself to learn a completely different form belly dance. She began to study American Cabaret with Sahara of Bend, Oregon and after relocating to Portland, she studied with Ruby Beh in a year-long intensive group called the Darjeeling Dance Collective. She continues to study with Sahara as well as independently, and to collaborate with a variety of other artists. She is grateful for this incredible dance journey filled with good friends, hilarious road trips, and sparkly treasures, and for such a wonderful outlet to to express the combination of strength and femininity that is Middle Eastern Dance.
