Affectionately known as the “Hillbilly Diva”, Susan Moran started belly dancing at the young age of 5, taking lessons from her mother, Jadon, right in her very own dining room. Susan engaged in belly d ancing competitions at age 12, which seemed to agree with the youngster as she rarely entered a competition that did not reward her efforts.
Fast-forward 32 years and this Diva is still dazzling the crowds. Susan was crowned 2nd place in the category ‘People’s Choice’ at Belly Dance USA Competition in 2011 and has recently added the honor of 2nd place in the category ‘Alternative Dance’ in Belly Dance USA Competition 2012.
Winning isn’t everything to this beautiful belly dancer – Susan stays true to her heart not only in performing, but in honoring those who have forged the way for belly dancers in the Northwest. On July 28th, 2012 Susan once again put on her dancing gear and was joined by many other talented belly dancers in honoring a dance pioneer who was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. Susan’s benefit not only raised money, but more importantly raised awareness and strengthened the ties that bind among the beloved Honoree, fellow talent, and those who are on their way to begin a Belly Dancing love of their own.
This Celebration of Belly Dance Community has become an annual tradition, now in its third year. Susan chooses a different dance family to celebrate every year with proceeds going to that family. Susan hopes that each year’s event will bring awareness to not only the need in our community but the love that is shared between dancers.
Mark your calendar and come down to Cozmic to see Susan and many other MEDGE dancers on Friday, December 20!
