Arabesque, featured in Third Annual Live Music Night, 11/2012

The Portland, Oregon based band performs traditional Middle Eastern (Turkish, Arabic, Persian & Armenian) Music on traditional acoustic instruments. The band is dedicated to the preservation of traditional styles of Middle Eastern music.

The Blue Monk 3341 SE Belmont Street Portland, Oregon presents Arabesque and the Oberon Middle Eastern Music & Dance Party every Wednesday at 8 PM. The weekly show features all of the hundreds of local/regional/ national Middle Eastern Belly Dancers. These dancers are signed up a year in advance and they all rotate so that everyone gets a chance to perform. The show is never the same. The audience also dances to Arabesque.

The show is probably the longest running live Middle Eastern Music & Dance show in North America. Michael Beach started it at the old Green Onion (2nd & Burnside) in 1994. From there it moved to the old Captain Beans (SE 12th), The Egyptian Club (SE Division), It’s a Beautiful Pizza (SE Belmont) and since 2008 – The Blue Monk. The show is dedicated to the late Oberon / Denise Amato. She was Beach’s friend and partner since 1998.

The Arabesque is Brothers of the Baladi and Arabesque founder Michael Beach (lead vocals, doubek, drums & mizmar), Clark Salisbury (also from Brothers of the Baladi on oud), Carolyn Eaton (Arabic accordion & kanoon), Roberta Gannett (violin), Kevin Bayliss (clarinet & oboe), Albert McDonnell (upright bass), Jerry Fugate (saz, riq & def) and Ruben Ramirez (dollala, def & davul).

MEDGE offers regular monthly shows the third Friday of each month at Cozmic, 8th & Charnelton in Eugene, OR.  Shows are family-friendly.  8:30 p.m., $5 suggested donation.
