Ann, featured May 2012

Ann Shaffer has been studying, performing, and teaching bellydance for over ten years. Although she got her first taste of the dance as a college student in Massachusetts, she found her first dance community in Bloomington, IN, while she was in graduate school at Indiana University. In 2006, Ann co-founded Dark Side Tribal, southern Indiana’s only American Tribal Style & Tribal Fusion troupe. Ann taught American Tribal Style bellydance classes in Bloomington from 2006 to 2010, and was sought as a performer and workshop instructor at venues throughout the Midwest, including a role as a featured instructor at Chicago’s Midwest Tribal Mafia in 2009. In July 2011, Ann completed certification in Rachel Brice’s 8 Elements, Phase 1: Initiation at Datura Studio in Portland. Ann’s approach to fusion bellydance draws holistically on many movement styles (including her training in flamenco, West African, hip hop, and modern dance in addition to bellydance), intimately informed by her strong sense of musicality as a classical musician. Ann moved to Eugene in February 2011 and has been delighted and inspired to discover the vibrant and welcoming dance community here.  Ann is also the newest member of troupe Tribalation!
