Sabrina took her first belly dance class in October 2006 after the Gypsy stage dancers at the Oregon Country Fair piqued her curiosity. It did not take many lessons to become hooked. Since then, she has dedicated herself to learning everything possible about Middle Eastern dance, music and culture.
Sabrina is interested in the classical style, particularly Classical Egyptian Raqs al-Sharki and American Oriental Style. She has studied with Astryd DeMichele, Mary Lingo, and is currently a student of Elena Villa.
Sabrina has a particular interest in understanding and interpreting the music in the most authentic style possible. She enjoys classic Arabic music, especially live performance, to which she prefers to perform.
Sabrina recently joined the troupe An Nour with whom she performs Samisha Shami’s choreographies.
She is also committed to following Mary Lingo’s efforts to bring belly dance to nursing homes. She organizes shows at different nursing homes, bringing joy to the residents and providing opportunities for novice dancers to acquire experience in front of an undemanding audience.
Sabrina believes it would take a lifetime to know everything about dance, music and culture. Therefore, we should see her around for quite a while.
Ritim Egzotik – Modern Turkish and Arabic Music Quintet in Portland, Oregon, USA “…the music is very energetic and rockin’, yet swanky, a bit dark and(of course) exotic. Using traditional Middle Eastern songs we drift into a kind of hookah haze of prog rock with a psychedelic style that still retains the Turko-Arabic beats and melodic scale system(maqam).” See http://ritimegzotik.com/ for more information and videos of this exciting musical quintet.
