House of Tarab is Seattle’s premier Arabic Music Ensemble. Consisting of Stephen Elaimy on oud, David McGrath on nay, Tracy “Alimah” Helming on violin, Michael Nagueb on the arabic micro-tone keyboard, Sean Daly on bass, Jane hall on riqq & Erik Brown on Tablah, H.O.T consistently delivers high energy lush dance music.
Dynamic, complex arrangements of classic Egyptian compositions from Oum Kalthoom, Halim Hafiz, Mohammed Abdel Wahab and Riyad al-Sonbati are a large part of the repertoire, as well as folk dance music from the greater middle east. Each instrumentalist is quite adept at taqsim (a solo improvisation) which is often incorporated either in a song or presented as an stand alone piece.
“Tarab” is a state of ecstasy and surrender one enters while listening, with Body and Soul, to music. Whether it’s the dancing strings of the Oud, the weeping melody of the violin, the mystical call of the nay or the pulsating rhythm of the drums…The ” House of Tarab” invites you in. The door is open.
